Math:
Babe spent the week getting more and more comfortable with "minute math", or solving addition sentences quickly. With every worksheet, I first said each problem out loud, seeing how fast she was able to answer it, and if it was correct or not. After she did that, I then handed her the worksheet to solve the problems all over again, this time writing down the answer.
She got better and better with each passing day (commenting on how "easy" it was using the ten frame in her head), and was ready towards mid-week to start three-addend addition sentences, which she was very good at.
So, at the end of the week, Babe not only did her Chapter 9 test (and aced it), she also completed her Lesson 100 Cumulative test.
Moving right along...fast!

Reading:
It's time. For real this time. Babe is ready for full on chapter books like Junie B. Jones! She devoured six...six illustrated chapter books this week and comprehended them beautifully! We worked on story mapping and picking out different events in the book to elaborate the details on. She just did so well, and when it came time to pick her two favorite, she told me it was a "hard choice because I liked them all!"
So cute.
She ended up choosing "The Ugly Egg" by Lou Keunzler and "Tigger Comes to the Forest" adapted by Stephen Krensky as her two favorite. So I then had her choose which one to story map and which one to write ten sentences about.
She mapped "The Ugly Egg" very well, with very little help, so I told her next week she won't need my help at all! Then she wrote her ten sentences about "Tigger Comes to the Forest" and read it aloud to me.
Just perfection.
So this week, entering September and faux-Fall, I'll hand her the first book in the Junie B. Jones series. Exciting!

Science:
This week we covered plants more in-depth than last week. While last week was about introduction to plants as living things, this week was more about the parts of plants and what each part does as a job.
I first encouraged the plant part labeling with a build-a-flower craft. Both Babe and Bubs loved this one.
Then there was a great experiment with celery and food coloring mid-week that blew Babe's mind in the realization that she actually eats stems. We set up the experiment, Babe doing each step on her own, and then we played the waiting game. A day later, the celery stalks were red in some spots, and had red leaves as well.
I then cut the stalks into pieces so Babe could see each individual "straw" inside. She was flabbergasted. It was such a cool experience!
Babe ended the week by completing her first Science test - the Chapter 1 Review in the textbook. Though it was called a Review, it was perfectly set up like a test so I treated it as so. She did wonderfully on it.
Third test on Friday: complete!

Social Studies:
Babe spent this week reviewing the directions more and travelling using directions. The main Social Studies activity of the week was mapping out her front yard (which she did so awesomely!) and I had her add a compass rose to the map, seeing if she remembered in which way the directions actually went.
She remembered!
Very neat.

And with that, the week (and month) was over! I'm excited to start some Fall activities with The Girls!
