9.2.3.

Math today was another two-lesson day, reviewing solid shapes and how they differ from plane shapes. Babe was able to name all the solid shapes I had examples of! That surprised me. And once we discussed the difference between a cone and a pyramid (new to 1st Grade Math), I felt she was good to go. She completed her worksheets and moved on.
Moved on to Reading Comprehension, with the article at the back of “Spring is Here”. I hid the pages from Babe and described the pictures I saw, then had her tell me the season I was describing. Piece of cake.
After setting Babe up with another Math worksheet, I headed to the back to go over shapes with Z and Bubs.
It’s weird how much both kids love doing that Melissa and Doug puzzle I previously talked about. I can dump the pieces out and they quickly gather what they can so I can call out who has what shape. Then they put in each piece as I call it. They worked together today to build the puzzle. It was quite cute.
I then brought out the dry oats and had them take turns calling out which shape I was drawing. I think Bubs was mesmerized at how the shapes formed in the oats. After drawing each one and having them grab the corresponding puzzle piece, I let them free play in the oats for a few minutes. When they were satisfied, they headed to the table for our Mother Goose Poem of the Day.
Babe chose “One, Two, Buckle My Shoe” which she pretty much already knows. I had her and Bubs recite it, then went to set up a shoe-lacing craft impromptu-ly. After failing miserably, I asked Babe and Bubs to get every pair of shoes they have and pile them in the living room. Then I had them make sure they all had matches, and the separate the matches into two buckets. I took one bucket and dumped it into the playroom, away from the living room. Babe dumped the other bucket in the living room, and one by one, I described a shoe to each and had them race across the house to find the match.
They. Loved. This.
It was amazing how a little idea like that becomes an OMGHUGEDEAL. haha
They loved this so much that for the rest of the morning, we played it outside. Yes, in the blistering heat, but we took turns hiding the shoes around the yard, then running to find the matches. No one complained about the heat and I think I burned about 500 calories from sweating. After we each took our turn, we all agreed it was time to head inside for a nice cup of cold water.

Who knew you had to look up for a shoe? :)

After lunch, Babe went through her Science worksheets on food that grows on plants, and sequencing tree growth. Once done, she ended the day with her writing lesson - adding two new sentences to her story (and learning the word “paragraph”, which she was able to start a new one today!).

Over the hump of the week already!
