6th Month. 4th Week. 4th Day.

Entering our seventh month!!! Crazy. Babe doesn't know it yet but there's only a couple months left of Kindergarten! And only a few weeks left until we start first grade Math!!! Gah! She even said to me today, "I'm just growing up too fast!"

I told her to stop.

In Math we finished up Chapter 10 and went over counting money and telling/reading the time. She was able to do both with ease, though counting money is still a little bit of a struggle. But she understands a lot of it and that is perfect for me!

After Math, we jumped in the car and headed to the library for Bubs and Z's class. While there, Babe wanted to work outside the classroom so I let her.

"I'm not going to steal the books, but is it OK if I take a book off the shelf and read it while you're in the classroom?"
"Of course! That's what a library is for!"

She got very excited at the independence and when I came out of the classroom, she had a book in her hand and she asked me if she could "pay" for it. So she took out her very own library card and brought the book to the librarian and checked it out all by herself.

The book was "Oh, The Thinks You Can Think!" by Dr. Seuss. She walked out of the library a little taller today.

After library and lunch, we did our last review of all our previous work. I brought out the 3D shapes again and then had a sheet of other 2D shapes for her to name. She named all of the 2D shapes but forgot what the cube and cone were called. I wasn't surprised. Shapes rarely come up in conversation.

After shapes was our continued discussion on presidents. She was able to again recall lots of details about the first three presidents she learned about, and the one thing that stuck out about FDR she remembered was the bombing of Pearl Harbor, which led to us bombing Japan. She even remembered that the atomic bombs were filled with lots of chemicals, and she also remembered the names of the two that we dropped! That impressed me the most. She was also able to recall a couple of details about how the March of Dimes was started.

When we finished our discussion on past presidents, I told her a little bit about our current president. I told her he was born in Hawaii.

"Where Japan bombed America!?"
"Yes! The same state!"

That was a cool connection. I also told her he was our first "brown" president and that he and his family have a dog named Bo living with them in the White House. I showed her pictures of Bo on the iPad and she thinks he is so cute.

I then brought out a book for her to try to read for her reading log. "I Want to be President" by Daniel Liebman is a neat book with real photos and it explains the process of becoming president. There were very tough words but Babe conquered it. She was able to finish reading and tell me that candidates say speeches and that Americans vote for who they want to be president. Then the person with the most votes gets to be president. Not bad.

After our discussion, I brought out the chart Babe made yesterday on wheels. I told her it was time to write a report on one of the categories. She picked fun wheels and was surprisingly good at thinking what she wanted to write. I had to help her a bit with starting each sentence because she wanted to write a novel instead of one or two sentences on each, but for the most part she did very well. I liked doing this a lot with her.

She spent a lot of time on this and was pretty much done for the day. She asked if she was done with school and I told her she had to do her Checkpoints first, then she could be done. When she finished with those, she started to the couch to relax for the rest of the day.

"WAIT! I have to read my library book!"
"You don't have to today if you are too tired."
"No, I want to!"

So she ran off to get her book and she read the whole thing. I told her it was the perfect book for her to read because it rhymed silly words and had a good rhythm in it. When she finished I could tell she was proud.

"Two books in one day! That's amazing!"
"Yeah! I am starting March off good."

I told her maybe she can start checking out one book a week if/when we go for class. She liked that idea.

So yes, we are starting March off on the right foot. Next week starts a new theme: transportation!
