Unbeknownst to Babe, this week is her last week in Kindergarten Math. She will start First Grade Math after next week. WOOHOO!!!
Today I did things a little different today and started lessons with Z and Bubs first. They were very excited about their new bins for St. Patrick's Day and they were eager to start.
Z picked the lacing bin, so I set him up with that.
Bubs saw the new pre-writing sheets and went right for those. They were new patterns, too, so she was very excited. She carefully traced each line.
Next, Z wanted to play with the frog bin so I lined up the numbered lily pads and only worked with 1-3 with him, but he did as was told and put the correct number of frogs on each lily pad! Amazing!
Bubs' next bin was the shamrock sizing chart. She successfully sorted the shamrocks into three piles: small, medium, and big.
I then had her take the shamrocks to make rows, going from smallest to biggest.
"They look like steps!"
haha. Cute. And she did this!
Then she put them back on the sorting sheet correctly.
After putting the bins away, we went over the Transportation flash cards again and then it was playtime! And time for me to get to Babe for her lessons.
In Math today Babe learned how to count to 100 by 2s. I wasn't quite sure how long it would take her to pick this up, but she blew me away (again) and learned it relatively quickly! I took out Calvert's 100 chart and had her put counters on each even number.
Halfway down, she realized the pattern and instead of going in order, she started going down the chart with the counters, instead of across.
So while the counters were still on the numbers, I had her try to count to 100 by 2s, without looking at the even numbers, but trying to figure it out by looking at which numbers were missing. She did! It was so cool. She hesitated a bit at the turn of each new set of ten, but it was really neat watching her figure it out on her own. After 20 minutes, she was easily able to count to 100 by 2s. Math was done!
I then had an intro discussion with her on the origin of St. Patrick's Day, mainly who St. Patrick was and what country he worked in. I showed her a labeled picture of Europe and had her find Ireland. She did! Then I showed her a blank map of Ireland and had her try to find it. When she did, I had her color it.
I then read them "St. Patrick's Day" by Gail Gibbons, one of the best books ever for Kindergartners who just want the basics of the holiday. It was very informative without being too wordy. Babe got pretty excited to learn more throughout the week.
After the book, I set the kids at the table and asked Babe what colors she thought were on the Irish flag.
"Well green for sure! And maybe yellow? For the gold coins?"
So cute.
I showed her a picture of one and had her split a sheet of paper into three equal parts. I did the same for Bubs and Z. I let Z handle the paint on his own, but told Bubs to "copy this" and showed her the picture of the flag. She needed a little help figuring things out, mostly because she wanted to scribble-paint so bad, but I controlled her and had her stop when she finished the correct colors.
Clean up time. Outside play. Lunch. Nap.
I then had Babe go to the library book shelf and pull two land transportation books to add to her reading log. She read "Brave Fire Truck" and "Mud Mess", both my Melinda Melton Crow. Her reading is getting better and better, though these books were a bit on the easy side.
After Checkpoints, I surprised Babe with a bit of swimming time! Spring and Summer are coming! Time to get used to swimming again!
And today's snack o' the day, Babe recognized right away.
"It's the flag we painted this morning! St. Patrick's flag!"
Ha! Close... :)
