In Math today, I went over a ton of new Math terms with Babe. And by "new Math terms" I mean, she has heard of them, but using them in Math is a new concept. It's actually kind of cool to see how Calvert is preparing 1st Grade students for harder Math - introducing terms like "just after", "one more", "in between", etc. to warm the students up for word problems. Like I said, though, Babe has heard of these terms so today was just repeating them like crazy to make sure she doesn't have to think too hard about what's "two after four." She did really well in Math today. It was fun. And it actually lasted all morning, so I set her up on the computer to do more Math games while I went in the back room with Z and Bubs.
Z chose the apple bin and he was working with it correctly for a little while, but I had to stop him in the middle of his golf game he invented...haha. Boys.
Hannah chose the clothespin cards and did amazing at counting each animal and picking the correct number. Then I had her put the cards in numerical order when she finished counting. She completed this whole activity 100% better than the last time she tried (after a long break from counting).
While Bubs did her pre-writing bin, I lined up the farm term cards and had Z match the picture cards to them. Then I had him find the matching toy.
Then when Z was done matching pictures, I had Bubs match the words, and she did! She is getting quicker about recognizing words and where they match. It's fun watching her eyes immediately go to the correct word when I hold up a card.
Both again did excellent today, and after distributing stickers I shortened playtime and set up the "milk" pouring bin in the dining room so everyone could have a chance at it. Even Babe wanted to try! So for the next 30 minutes, all three kids took turns pouring their little hearts out.
Z was having a slight issue with pouring at the table, so I grabbed the mini desk from the back room and set that up in the dining room so he could stand while pouring. It worked out much better for him!
Look at that concentration!
After clean up, outside play!!!
After lunch, I grabbed all the maps we had and laid them out on the living room floor to continue our discussion on continents, countries, and states. Babe remembered that continents are bigger "because they are the countries that hold all the other countries." hehe
I worked with her a bit more on recognizing that Florida is a state inside the country of the USA inside the continent of North America. She did OK with this, but to help her visualize it a bit more, I got out my nesting dolls. I took the three smallest ones and told her that the smallest one was a state and showed her how it fit into the next biggest one, the country, and how that fit into the next biggest one, the continent. She really liked this a lot so I practiced with different parts of the world, except I have no idea how countries in Europe are split, so I kind of improvised. She still thought it was fun - opening up the dolls every time and then putting them back together. So I call that a successful discussion.
What made it extra successful was the fact that when we talked about Ireland, she not only remembered where it was located but also remembered that "St. Patrick was kidnapped and bringed there but then he left and went back home to England, but then went back to Ireland to teach them about God!"
Um. Yeah. Wow!!!
After our discussion, I had her take all the nouns she wrote down yesterday from "The Story of Half-Chicken" and add one (or two...or three) adjectives to them. She did (but I forgot a photo).
We ran right up to the time of OMGgetreadyfordance.
And there goes Tuesday.
