Today seemed like a short day, but I think it's because we aren't on a full theme yet. We are just covering Easter and having Spring fun. And that's OK!
Today in Math we covered more about patterns, and filling in an empty spot with the correct piece, which Babe was able to do. Perfectly. So yeah, Math was pretty boring today. Oops.
For Reading Comprehension, Babe read "Cows in the Kitchen" by June Crebbin. This book introduced the idea of "silly" books, stories written for no real point except to make you laugh. And it certainly was a very cute and funny book. Babe made sure to yell out the words that were in capital letters, too.
After a short discussion on the story, I gave Babe some prep work to do for our next craft while I went to the back with Z and Bubs.
Z again chose the Easter egg skewers to work with, while Bubs went right for the tracing sheets again.
After working with those bins for a bit, I had them each choose a different one of their choice. Bubs picked the rice bin and Z picked the shadow matching sheet (WHICH HE TOTALLY ROCKED AT AND EVEN NOTICED THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE GIRL AND BOY SHADOWS OK I'M DONE BEING AMAZED).
While Z took extra time to repeat that activity another three times, I had Bubs practice writing her capital Es. Beautiful work.
Next, I had her point out the capital E and lowercase e, which she did. Then I had her do a worksheet (provided by overthebigmoon.com, which ALL bin work came from for this week!)
And you know what, she rocked at this worksheet, following my instructions of coloring the capital E's yellow and the lowercase e's orange!
Brilliant! Double high fives! Then playtime!
During playtime, I went back with Babe and we had a short discussion on metamorphosis. She knows all about caterpillars changing to butterflies but she wasn't sure of the name. So a brief discussion ensued.
"Metamorphosis is when something changes into something completely different, like a caterpillar into a butterfly. Butterflies lay eggs but butterflies don't hatch from them, caterpillars do!"
"So is metamorphosis also when tadpoles change into frogs?"
Why yes, yes it is.
My jaw dropped and I asked her how she connected the two!
"I don't know. Baby frogs aren't frogs, they are tadpoles!"
So our discussion time shortened by a lot after that, and I gathered Z and Bubs in the living room to join us.
I read them all "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle. It's one of the girls' favorite books but it fit into our discussion perfectly. No one seemed to mind that we've read it a hundred times before. Plus, it set us up for craft time.
I gave each of them five green circles and one red circle with two googly eyes and two pipe cleaners. I first had them decorate their caterpillars face.
Then, on Bubs and Z's caterpillar bodies, I numbered each circle 1-5. Bubs was able to put them in numerical order! The first try! Really cool. Z's was more for number recognition than anything.
I can't stand the adorableness of Babe's caterpillar feet!!!!!!!!!
We finished craft time just in time for outside play, which was very short today due to Florida's heat. Ugh.
After lunch, Babe and I discussed more about metamorphosis and I read her "Curious George's Tadpole Trouble." It reminded me of the time we tried to keep tadpoles over the summer to witness the change, but they all died within days of catching them. However, Babe has seen caterpillars change to butterflies, which was a cool experience.
When we finished with that, I handed her "Dragon's Easter Egg Hunt" to add to her reading log. We love this Dragon character! He is such a cutie!
And with that, I sent her for a quick cat nap before dance to try to kick this cold before our Easter feast on Sunday!
Onward to Wednesday!
