In Math today, Babe worked a bit more with word problems, this time using the terms 'greater than', 'less than', and 'equal to.' I showed her the corresponding signs and showed her the secret of knowing which way to draw the 'greater than' sign.
I taught her the trick when I was in school, how the signs look like big alligator mouths. She got a big kick out of that, and I told her that the alligator always wants to eat the biggest number. I then gave her a whole sheet of numbers to do this with.
Check that out! She picked up on it really quickly and was able to tell me the sentences that go along with it. She didn't even hesitate when she had to switch from "more than" to "less than."
Amazing!
I left her with a few worksheets to do while I went in the back room for a short lesson with Bubs and Z. Z continued with the apple picking bin while Bubs did the egg shaker bin two times. She loves it! She doesn't even notice the pre-writing sheets anymore. It kind of makes me sad!
When they were each done with their bins, I set Z up with the foam number puzzle while Bubs practiced her word matching again. I set out the same picture cards - dog, cat, cow, horse, and farmer. I them spread out the word cards and asked her to match them.
SHE DID! Incredible. I was so proud.
We finished with a bit of time for everyone to practice their pouring of "milk" for a few minutes, then we loaded up the car and headed to the library for class.
After lunch, I had Babe recall the details of the book "Cows in the Kitchen" and then do the worksheet that goes along with the story. I then read her "Only Cows Allowed!" by Lynn Plourde, a new book from the library. It was the perfect time to read it. The cows in this book were the first ones on a new farm, and they got nice and comfortable in the barn. But when the other animals showed up, they found another place to call home...the farmer's house! So cute. Babe recognized the unplanned connection and laughed.
"Uh oh! The farmer isn't sleeping in this book like in the last one! The cows are in his house and he's dancing!"
ha! She was exactly right. So cute.
I then told her that for the rest of the month, she was going to learn about farms.
"I already know all about farms."
"You do know a lot about farms, but this time we are going to learn about different kinds of farms, the jobs on the farm, and what the animals are for on the farm. Like, what kinds of stuff the animals give us."
"Oh, like cows give us milk and chickens give us beef and pork?"
haaaaaaaaaaahahahahhahahaha Exactly.
Since she does know a lot about farms, I wanted her to spend the rest of the afternoon drawing a farm scene.
"Here is a big piece of paper. I want you to draw all the stuff you know that lives on the farm. But in this picture, I want you to add something silly that couldn't happen on a real farm, like the stories we read today were full of silly things.
She didn't disappoint.
She even added the cute little weather vane on the barn from the book we read earlier this week.
And do you see the silly thing? :)
"It's a cow! He's sitting in a rocking chair! And he's reading a book. But he's reading the book backwards!"
"And what makes this silly?"
"Tat2! Cows can't read!"
Oh. My bad.
I did laugh out loud though when I saw her silly picture. Her face lit up.
We officially ended the day by adding "More" by I. C. Springman to her reading log. It was one of the books she checked out from the library and it was a little easy for her but the illustrations were beautiful.
Onward to Friday! WOO!
